Stem cells represent a unique opportunity for researchers to not only understand developmental biology, but to potentially provide treatments for a variety of human diseases. Stem cells are essentially undifferentiated cells and have the capability of dividing and replenishing themselves over time and when exposed to various signals, can morph into specialized cell types. Two broad categories of stem cells are recognized: embryonic stem cells that exist in blastocysts and adult stem cells that are found in adult tissues. Embryonic stem cells can differentiate into specialized cells that comprise the complex tissues and organs of the developing human. Adult stem cells provide a renewable source of specialized cells that maintain and repair adult tissues.
